Where did Hot Cross Buns come from? These sweet buns, traditionally eaten during Lent, have been around for centuries. While they are associated with Christian symbolism (such as the cross on the bun representing the crucifixion of Jesus and the spices inside signifying the spices used to embalm him), there are also many folklores and superstitions surrounding them.

Some believe the buns originated in the 12th century when a monk first baked the buns on Good Friday and marked them with a cross.

There is folklore about hot cross buns baked on Good Friday. It says if those buns are hung in your kitchen they will not spoil and will remain mold-free for the year. Then you can replace it with a fresh one the next year. Some would use these buns as medicine throughout the year as they were thought to cure all ills.

Another folklore says if you hung a bun in your kitchen it would protect against fires and all your baked breads would come out perfect. And if you were going on an ocean voyage you definitely wanted to bring some buns as they would afford protection against shipwrecks!

At Breads and Beyond Bakery we are making them by the hundreds! No matter what you may celebrate, come and get some of these delicious sweet buns that have been a tradition for centuries. Stop in or call ahead and order yours!
